Formal Training My formal training and education is in the field of biology/ physiology. I have been doing triathlons for 27 years. I did my first race in 1982. It was a small race as were all races during that time, in Cary North Carolina. I average doing 5-8 races a year. One year, I actually did 18 races. During this time I have been able to combine my training ethic and formal education into very concise injury free triathlon tenure. I am an AFAA Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Triathlon Academy Triathlon Coach. I have been a personal trainer for 12 years. I started as the fitness trainer for the military unit I was in while serving in the US Army. Prior to entering the army, I was a certified USS age-group swim coach. While I was a personal trainer, I designed a multitude of training programs for individuals based on science and their individuality. These programs included weight training, cardiovascular training, sports specific training and nutrition training. Things that work for one individual do not work for all individuals. I have been in the sport of triathlon for over 25 years. I have been a formal Triathlon Coach for 11 years. I am currently a Triathlon Academy Certified Coach. I currently organize and assist in coaching the largest triathlon training camp in the world. Each year Tucson becomes home for two weeks for 40 –60 triathlon camp participants. Every individual receives VO2max testing and individualized coaching in swimming, biking and running. Over the years I have coached several elite and age-group Triathlon competitors. All have reached goals they had set for themselves. Some of the most notable have been the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Triathlon Team. The team consisted of approximately 15 men and 6 women. At one point the teams numbers swelled to 42 athletes. Only after 2 years of existence, the team placed 4th at collegiate nationals. During that same year, we had top 2 male finishers with one of those athletes setting the bike course record, which until recently was finally broken. My training/coaching technique is based on the theory of periodization. This a scientific approach to training based on physiological adaptations. These adaptations include aerobic endurance, speed and skill development. I like to use science because it is my expertise. With the use of periodic testing, I can see changes with in the athlete. Science also forms the structure of the training. By using sound physiological principles, a safe no nonsense training plan can be developed and implemented. Hopefully by structuring the training this way, I can eliminate injury and increase the speed to which one might attain a goal.
